Public Safety Citizen's Academy

The Auburn Police & Fire Departments are happy to announce the first ever, joint Public Safety Citizens Academy. This 8-week program is designed to allow the citizens of Auburn to learn about and experience the inner workings of their public safety departments. The Academy class is scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the spring 2023. Course dates will be announced after the first of the year. The program will be held at both the Auburn Police and Fire Stations on various nights.

This program will cover a variety of topics to include patrol work, Emergency Medical Services, detective bureau, 911 Communications Center, legal issues, firefighting and equipment as well as specialty units such as dive teams, SWAT, K9’s and the towns drone program.

Each student will have the opportunity to participate in a ride-along with each of the disciplines. You can ride with an officer on patrol, ride with on duty Firefighters and Paramedics and spend time with our Communication Specialists in the 911 center. Rules and expectations will be addressed at the first class. There will be hands-on exercises at most classes.

 We understand that circumstances may require an absence however missing excessive classes may result in dismissal. Any requirement of participation may be waived or modified upon review and approval of the Chiefs of Department.

Interested applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Resident of Auburn for at least one-year, minimum age of 18.
  • Consideration will be given to applicants who work in Auburn but do not live in Auburn.
  • Be willing to submit to a background investigation to include a criminal record check and driver’s history check. This program requires that participants can be trusted in a town building and vehicle observing sensitive matters.
  • An open mind and positive attitude.
